Ivo Daalder is the U.S. Ambassador to NATO and the author or co-author of several books, including "In the Shadow of the Oval Office: Portraits of the National Security Advisers and the Presidents They Serve" (2009), "Beyond Preemption: Force and Legitimacy in a Changing World" (2007) and "Winning Ugly: NATO's War to Save Kosovo" (2000). A native of the Netherlands, Daalder received his PhD in political science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1995 he became a member of President Bill Clinton's National Security Council staff, serving as Director for European Affairs. He went on to spend 12 years as a Senior Fellow in Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution. In 2009 President Barack Obama appointed him the U.S. Permanent Representative on the Council of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).
