Dan Rather anchored CBS Evening News for 24 years, the longest tenure of any American anchorman. After stepping down from the Evening News desk in 2005, he began hosting "Dan Rather Reports," an Emmy Award-winning weekly one-hour news program on HDNet. Rather is the author of "Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News" (2012). A native of Texas, he landed a job with the Associated Press after earning a journalism degree from Sam Houston State University. His television career began in 1959 at KTRK-TV Houston; in 1961 he became a CBS News network correspondent. Rather spent the 1960s as CBS' Southern bureau chief, then joined the "60 Minutes" team as a correspondent in 1974. He succeeded legendary newsman Walter Cronkite as the Evening News anchor in 1981.
