Zach Wahls is a native Iowan who appeared before the Iowa House of Representatives in 2010 when he was only 19 years old. Wahls made an impassioned argument against a proposed amendment to the state constitution that would have banned same-sex marriage, which became legal in Iowa in 2009. After a YouTube clip of his speech went viral, Wahls became a national advocate for LGBTQ rights. He works with several civil rights groups as a consultant and serves as the program coordinator for the Iowa City chapter of Summer of Solutions. He is the author of "My Two Moms" (2012), a memoir about his experience being raised by two lesbian mothers.
