Madeleine Albright served as U.S. Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001, the first woman to hold that position. She is the author of several books, including "Madam Secretary" (2003), "Read My Pins" (2009) and "Prague Winter: A Personal Story of Remembrance and War" (2012). Born in Prague, Albright became a United States citizen in 1957 and earned a political science degree from Wellesley College. After working in journalism and giving birth to three children, she earned advanced degrees from Columbia University's Department of Public Law and Government. In 1976 she became chief legislative assistant to U.S. Senator Ed Muskie of Maine; she was subsequently tapped as the National Security Council's congressional liaison under the Carter administration. Albright is the founder of the Albright Group, a Washington, D.C.-based international strategy consulting firm, and teaches international relations at Georgetown University's Walsh School of Foreign Service.
