Austan Goolsbee is the former chief economist for the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board (PERAB), a panel created in 2009 in response to the economic crisis. Goolsbee stepped down as chairman of the president's Council of Economic Advisers in the fall of 2011. He teaches at the University of Chicago, where he is the Robert P. Gwinn Professor of Economics at the Booth School of Business. Goolsbee advised Obama in his 2004 Senate race and was the senior economic advisor to the 2008 presidential campaign, becoming the youngest member of the Obama cabinet. A former Fulbright scholar, Goolsbee worked at the National Bureau of Economic Research, the American Bar Foundation and the U.S. Census Advisory Committee before joining the Obama team. Goolsbee was born in Waco, Texas, and married Robin Winters, former director of business development at MTV International, in 1997. They have three children.
