The Daily Show is an Emmy- and Peabody Award-winning program that takes a sharp, hilarious look at current events, covering politics, technology, trends, pop culture, sports and entertainment. In each show, anchor Jon Stewart and a team of correspondents including Aasif Mandvi, Wyatt Cenac, John Oliver, Jason Jones and Samantha Bee -- tackle the news of the day, using real news footage, taped field pieces and on-the-spot coverage of important issues. Jon also conducts exclusive in-studio interviews with politicians, comedians, actors, authors and other guests, from the world-famous to the obscure-yet-fascinating.
Created by Lizz Winstead and Madeleine Smithberg in 1996, The Daily Show was hosted by Craig Kilborn until 1999, when Jon Stewart took over the anchor's chair. Since then, The Daily Shows unique brand of satire has turned the show into televisions most incisive observer of politics and the media itself.
In 2000, The Daily Show was on the scene in Florida covering the unprecedented vote recount that led to George W. Bushs first presidency. Soon after, Jon faced one of his most difficult challenges as a fake-news anchor, delivering a stirring 10-minute address to open the shows return after September 11. This was followed by The Daily Show's darkly comic Iraq War coverage, which evolved into regular Middle East features called Mess OPotamia.
The 2004 presidential election was a defining season for The Daily Show, with its first live broadcasts from the major party conventions, its first on-air announcement of a presidential candidacy (John Edwards) and its first interview with a major candidate (John Kerry). After George W. Bush's re-election, Jon hit new peaks as a commentator by providing the clearest and most trenchant analysis of the Valerie Plame and U.S. Attorney firing scandals anywhere on television and delivering an unforgettable monologue after Hurricane Katrina. To no ones surprise, American political hijinks did not end with the Bush era. The Daily Shows coverage of the contentious 2008 campaigns (Indecision 2008) led to the shows take on Barack Obamas inauguration (Changefest '09), the world financial crisis (Clusterf#@k to the Poorhouse), midterm elections set against the rise of the Tea Party and the health care debate (Indecision 2010) and, of course, the first stirrings of Indecision 2012.
During Jon Stewarts tenure The Daily Show has also become an incubator for top comedic talent, having been instrumental in launching the careers of Steve Carell ("The Office," "The 40 Year Old Virgin"), Stephen Colbert (The Colbert Report), Ed Helms ("The Office") and Rob Corddry ("Old School," "Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay").
